Art by Frances Bates
Why so Judgmental? (2016)
I wrote this for a college event for National Coming Out Day.
Look here, I’m queer
Don’t steer clear
Have no fear
Embrace this atmosphere
I like art
Pretty smart
Have lots of heart
So why depart?
Don’t judge with one glance
Just give me a chance
Come on let’s dance
This music has me in a trance
You look at me weird
But this is how I’m engineered
I did not volunteer
I just appeared
We are not in an exam
I shouldn’t have to draw a diagram
I love who I am
Can you tell me the same fam?
Time (2010)
This was featured in a student artwork book when I was in middle school.
If only we could go back in time.
We could fix all our mistakes, wrong choices, and reactions.
Then we could be perfect.
But now that I think about it,
Would it be a good thing to be perfect?
Isn’t it what makes us human - to be imperfect?
We will have to
See what time brings us.
Maybe it will bring us the power to time travel,
Maybe not.
Whatever the answer,
I hope it will be good for humanity.
